Oh Sh!t – A story about health

Hey, it might be a less glamorous side of things, nonetheless, sh*t is a very important one. We might talk it, or give it, or might know someone who is a piece of it, but we get coy when it’s time to own it as an integral part of our health ecosystem. We all do it so let’s make talking about it less of a taboo and more of an open conversation about health and well-being. I’ll start.

When it comes to assessing health, Ayurveda considers various factors, including the quality of your stool. In Ayurveda, the state of your stool is believed to reflect the balance or imbalance of your doshas, digestive fire, and overall health.

poop and doshas a story about health
The Importance of Stool in Ayurveda

In Ayurveda, the stool is known as purisha and is considered a vital indicator of the body’s state of health. Its formation and elimination are part of a good functioning digestive tract, together with ingestion, digestion, proper sense of taste, and a healthy appetite. We are all too familiar with an array of digestive issues like flatulence, bloating, feeling heavy or sluggish after a meal, heartburn, constipation, or nausea so how do we pinpoint the course of action to treat and prevent these issues?

You guessed it, by looking at your poop. The color, consistency, frequency, and odor of your stool can provide valuable insights into your digestive system, metabolism, and the balance of the three doshas – Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. At the same time, it is a good indicator of the presence of excess toxins in the body.

Interpreting Stool Characteristics
  • Color: The color of your stool can reveal imbalances in your doshas. For example, a pale or whitish stool may indicate a Kapha imbalance, while a dark stool could signal excess Vata. Excess Pitta stools have a yellowish color.
  • Consistency: The consistency of your stool is linked to your digestive fire, agni. Loose or watery stools may suggest a too strong agni, while hard, dry stools may indicate irregular agni.
  • Frequency: According to Ayurveda, healthy bowel movements should occur 1-2 times a day, ideally as soon as you wake up. Irregular bowel habits can point to underlying imbalances in the doshas.
The perfect sh!t

The perfect stool is one that is formed as a sausage, bound together, either displaying cracks on the surface or smooth, and is medium brown in color. Elimination happens at least once a day and there is no abdominal discomfort or bloating. However, imbalances in the doshas can cause different manifestations of an unhealthy poop.

  • Vata Imbalance: If your stool is dry, hard, dark in color, and comes out in small pieces (think of goat drops) it may indicate a Vata imbalance. When Vata dosha is out of balance, it can lead to irregular bowel movements, such as constipation, dry or hard stools, and excessive gas. This occurs because Vata, characterized by the elements of air and space, tends to disrupt the normal moisture and lubrication in the intestines. As a result, the transit time of waste through the colon slows down, causing stools to become dry and difficult to pass.
  • Pitta Imbalance: A stool that is loose, yellowish in color, and has a strong odor might point towards a Pitta imbalance. A Pitta imbalance in the digestive system can significantly affect stool characteristics, often resulting in diarrhea, loose or oily stools, and a strong, unpleasant odor. Pitta, governed by the elements of fire and water, tends to increase heat and acidity in the body. When this dosha is out of balance, it can lead to inflammation and hyperactivity in the digestive tract. This heightened activity speeds up the transit time of waste through the intestines, reducing water absorption and causing loose or watery stools.
  • Kapha Imbalance: Stools that are pale, greasy, and heavy suggest a Kapha imbalance. This imbalance may be connected to sluggish digestion and respiratory problems. A Kapha imbalance in the digestive system often manifests through stool that is heavy, sticky, and sluggish. Kapha, associated with the elements of earth and water, tends to create a sense of heaviness and stagnation in the body. When this dosha is out of balance, it can lead to slow digestion and an accumulation of mucus in the stool, making it thick and sticky. Some might experience infrequent bowel movements, a feeling of incomplete evacuation, and general sluggishness in the digestive process

Next time you visit the bathroom, take a moment to observe your stool. Understanding its characteristics can provide valuable clues about your health and guide you toward making positive changes to support your well-being. By embracing Ayurvedic principles and listening to what your stool is telling you, you can take proactive steps toward achieving optimal health.

Remember, your stool speaks volumes about your health – pay attention to what it’s saying!
