Marma Magic: The concept of Marma Points

Ayurveda has so much to offer and until you experience it for yourself, it’s just theory. Marma points, or marmāni, are very much like that: only when you experience it for yourself this magic will reveal itself. So, what is it?

The Concept of Marma Points

Marma points, marmāni, can be translated as secret points and is sometimes understood as non-invasive acupuncture that Ayurveda uses for both treatment as well as diagnosis. It’s a practice where you can touch and activate different points on the physical body, like a gigantic switchboard. You see, these points are not just the physical body, but a junction between the physical etheric, astral and causal body.

Everything is energy and that’s all there is to it

– ALBERT EINSTEIN –

The definition of marma points that I prefer is therefore vital energy points. These points are deeply connected with prana and a vast network of energy pathways (nadis). In Ayurveda, prana is a core concept and is, in essence, the vital life force in us and everything around us, the subtle life energy that gives health and vitality. Many practices in Ayurveda are aimed at keeping prana and its channels open and flowing. This is where marma therapy comes in to truly work its magic. Not only because of its impact on the physical body, but with awareness it will help prana to flow, to calm the mind and to balance emotions.

Marma and emotions

Emotions are energy in motion, they are healthy vibrations in our mind space, but as with everything, they can get out of balance. Emotions can be seen as crystallization of certain feelings in the cells, blocking prana or not allowing it to flow properly. By touch through the marmāni, there can be a release of unexpressed or unresolved emotions.

In my work as a therapist, I have countless examples of how this seemingly simple practice can have a profound effect. I remember this one client who was unable to feel a connection with the body. It was hard for her to experience any kind of emotions, specifically the ones that are less welcome.

For the first session, I focused on her head, as calming the mind is helpful through some of the marmāni on the head. As we went through the session, I could feel her sinking, her energy moving down into her body with a sense of calmness and quiet coming over her. When I connected with her the day after the session, she mentioned that she started crying when she got home. Not a crying where we are absorbed in the story that makes us sad, but a crying that was just happening, releasing tension and giving her a sense of relief. True magic.

Marma therapy is true magic that helps prana flow, calms the mind and balances emotions.

This all sounds really lovely, and now it is time to experience it for yourself. Books describe 117 major marmāni and for specific diseases and treatments you will need the help of a practitioner. But that doesn’t mean you cannot try for yourself!

Let’s start with one of these 117 marmāni, my favorite: Jatrū, which means ‘to preserve’ or ‘to maintain’. Health can be seen as a good functioning immune system and, in Ayurvedic terms, strong Ojas. This point, Jatrū, supports the heart, creates strong Ojas and supports a strong immune system.

Why is it my favorite marma point practice? Because as I experience it, life is about connecting with the heart, and, with that, connecting with self love, self acceptance and a softness that allows me to live a more intentional life.

How to activate JATRŪ?
  • Start by centering yourself, a breathing practice can be very supportive before you start.
  • Bring your awareness into your body. Remember: energy goes where your attention goes.
  • Place your middle finger or pointer finger on the bone just below the dimple at the base of your neck, underneath the throat. No need for oil, unless you do this as part of your abhyanga.
  • Lightly tap on this bony structure. This will awaken the immune function.
  • After a couple of moments, or shall we say breaths, you can let go and experience the after effect for yourself.
